Happy Birthday Lisa: Memories and Messages to Last a Lifetime
Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, the powerhouse rapper/songwriter/performer from the Soul/R&B group TLC, has touched millions of people all over the world. As a performer, her fans inspired her to give 100 percent of herself on stage, and as a humanitarian, the beauty of "The Bush" in Honduras touched her heart.
Thursday is her birthday, and while friends and fans miss the woman they look up to, they vowel to keep her spirit alive. Thanks to her mother Wanda Lopes, sister Reigndrop Lopes and brother Ron Lopes, her legacy continues.
Fans from all parts of the world share fond memories of Lopes. Canadian TLC fan Melanie Anderson feels inspired by her. "She was just so talented and so smart," Anderson said. "Her love for her fans and the underprivileged [is touching]."
Anderson's been a TLC fan since their debut album "Ooooooh... On The TLC Tip" released in 1992, but most of her favorite memories revolve around the release of "FanMail," in 1999. When asked about these memories, she said, "Too many," but noted that they were all positive.
TLC fans range in all ages – some witnessing the release of their debut album, others discovering them when their song "No Scrubs" hit radio. For the women of TLC, the age of a fan never mattered. New York's Tamara Robinson became a fan when TLC's album "CraZySeXyCOol" released in 1994. "‘Eye' was a TLC fan since I was two or three," she said. "‘Eye' use to dance and wait for Lisa's rap to sing [to]. She caught my eye."
Robinson looks up to Lopes and has a message for her family: "Your daughter is so special," she said. "She touched so many lives and possibly saved some. I love and miss her, and don't worry because she's with us every day."
The legacy of "Left Eye" is strong and felt within the hearts of friends as well. Georgia's Byron Gillison met Lopes before TLC's debut single "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" released, and according to him, "We were instantly friends."
Gillison adores the friendship he shared with Lopes and treasures their memories together. "Lisa has a pure heart," he said. "She gives unconditional love and helps anyone in need. I was drawn to her creative vibe. She was a visual learner as well as a musical artist. She has been the sister I never had."
Gillison said he, along with other friends were what Lopes called her "Extended family."
Lopes' passing was hard, but her message-filled lyrics stand as a positive foundation of what was in her heart. Those touched by her say her lyrics remain timeless. "Her words in her music are phenomenal," Anderson said.
Fan Jessica Rollyson from West Virginia appreciates Lopes' originality. "[I] love the fact that she's a real person – nothing fake," Rollyson said. "[She] always keeps it real. Her rhymes [are] so inspirational to us all." Venezuelan fan Adriano Hernandez shares Rollyson's feelings.
Hernandez looks up to Lopes for her Humanitarian heart. "Her love for children in Honduras – God is great," he said. He considers Lopes' legacy a gift and is inspired by her generosity. "I'd like to visit the foundation of Honduras and help these children." Like many people, Hernandez feels called to carry on the work Lopes started in Honduras.
The legacy "Left Eye" started has held strong throughout the years. With the help of her family, many of Lopes' dreams have been accomplished. January 2009, her family released "Eye Legacy" – her first U.S. album. Not only was this special for her family and friends, but for fans as well. Songs like "Spread Your Wings," featuring Free and "Listen" contain lyrics from Lisa's soul.
Family, friends and fans will never forget the gifts Lopes gave them. According to Gillison, motivation was one of her gifts. Lopes' goal was to inspire others to act positive. Gillison said Lopes constantly motivated him and he has nothing but love and respect for her. "I love you sis," he said. "I miss you. I feel you. You still speak to me. I hope to have your legacy going and adapt things in my life you've taught and shared with me. ‘Eye Left!'"
Those who love Lopes miss her, but are celebrating the mark she left on the world. Their message is simple, but heartfelt: "Happy birthday Lisa. We love you."

My parents are from Ghana and i know almost every twi word except for happy birthday, if there is one. Plus, today is my friends birthday and she happens to be the only other person with Ghanian parents and i think it would be very sweet if i could wish her a happy birthday in twi.
"There is no definite way of saying happy birthday in twi, but "me ma wo awoda pa" is accepted. Me(I) ma (wish) wo (you) awoda (birthday) pa(good). pronounced me-mi, ma-ma, wo-wu, awoda- a-wo-da, pa-pa. You can add "Nyame mma wo mfie ntoaso" to wish the person many happy returns. Nyame (God) mma (grant) wo (you) mfie ntoaso (many returns).
"Afihya pa" is used for christmas, new year and other social gatherings occuring yearly like festivals but absolutely not for birthdays. "
